Twice in a single chapter the same sentence appears: he refused to listen to her. Had Amnon listened to his sister, the whole tragedy, and everything it dragged along behind it, would never have happened. He did listen, in fact, only to the wrong person, because the scheme came from an adviser. That observation opens a sermon about a pattern that repeated itself in the next generation of David’s family (2 Samuel 13). An inherited pattern does not have to be carried further, though; you can say with Joshua, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Listen if you want to check whether anyone close to you would tell you a truth you do not want to hear.
