An elderly man walked past his neighbours’ house every day with his equally elderly dog, until one day he stopped. When the neighbour finally knocked, he saw the lead hanging on a hook in the hall, and the little son later asked his parents what the old man had done to be punished like that. That story opens a sermon about the second chapter of James (James 2). James writes there about a church that sorts people into important and less important, and reminds them that faith without deeds is dead, because the opposite of love is often not hatred but indifference.
