Everyone knows someone who promises that from Monday they will start reading, start running, or finally keep an eye on the family budget, and most of us meet that person every morning in the mirror. That picture opens a sermon about Israel, a people who had left Egypt but still knew only how to live like slaves, and about what God says to them at the foot of Sinai (Exodus 20). The Ten Commandments do not begin with demands or a list of prohibitions, but with the words “I am the Lord your God”, with the covenant promised to Abraham 430 years earlier, and with the line from Exodus 19:4: “I brought you to myself.” The sermon also shows that the Hebrew reads closer to “you will not murder, you will not steal”, a description of how someone who truly belongs to God lives, rather than a dry list of rules. Listen if good intentions alone have never been enough to change anything in your life.
God Gives a Map and Directions for the Road – The Ten Commandments
Exodus: The Road to Freedom
How do we navigate life when we sometimes lack the strength to get started, and even when we manage to set out on a journey, we’re not quite sure which direction to take? The Israelites faced similar challenges when they were still slaves in Egypt. But God Himself-the One who liberates, teaches, guides, and gives a new identity to all who are lost-once again stepped into their story.
The book of Exodus lies ahead of us.
