A dying comedian asks for the curtain to come down, the farce is over, a person’s last words reveal who they really were. This sermon invites you to sit right beside Jesus and listen in on his conversation with the Father just hours before his death (John 17). In the face of suffering Jesus speaks not of pain but of the mutual delight between Father and Son, and prays for those who stay behind, including us. Teach Us to Pray
Of all the spiritual practices the disciples could have asked Jesus to teach them, they chose this one: prayer. Jesus himself not only taught them how to pray, but through stories and parables he showed how humble and persistent prayer can change reality. “Breaking through to heaven”, that’s how John Ortberg described prayer, and that’s what we’ll seek to learn alongside Jesus’ disciples during Lent.
