Barely a few months after her first visit to church, a young woman already had “her” seat, and felt genuinely disappointed when someone else took it. That small scene opens a reflection on the thirteenth chapter of the book of Nehemiah (Nehemiah 13): Nehemiah returns to Jerusalem and discovers that the people who so recently celebrated the renewal of the covenant are once again neglecting the temple, the Sabbath, and God’s word. The sermon asks an uncomfortable question: how quickly do we forget who we were and what God has delivered us from, and why do we need people who will lovingly remind us of the truth? Listen before the miracle of forgetting becomes the curse of oblivion.
