Two anglers sit by the water complaining that the worst part of taking a wife fishing was that she caught more than the two of them ever had. That light-hearted scene opens a reflection on Jesus by the lake, on nets tearing under the weight of fish, and on the calling of Levi the tax collector, who leaves his table and throws a feast for the very people nobody would eat with (Luke 5). The sermon asks about the net that holds your life together and points to the three cords it really hangs on: nearness to Jesus, admitting your own need, and a changed way of thinking. Listen if you are starting to notice how full of holes your own net can be.
New Nets for the Kingdom
One on One
Who wouldn’t want to be able to change the world for the better? Although God Himself will bring about this ultimate change, there is a place for each of us in His plan, because He wants to use each of us. And Jesus Himself set an example for us of how we can do this. When we look at how Jesus interacted with those around Him, we discover that although He was often surrounded by crowds, He always paid attention to individuals. His approach was one-on-one. So how can we use that one encounter, that one meal, that one conversation, so that one person might experience the goodness of God Himself?
