When someone says they do not believe in God, the preacher has one question ready: which God is it that you don’t believe in? Nine times out of ten what follows is a portrait of someone vindictive, indifferent and disappointed in humanity, a caricature that pays well for anyone who positions himself between you and a god like that. The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6) has us begin with the word Father, and Jesus adds that whoever has seen him has seen the Father. The sermon does not sidestep painful experiences of one’s own father. Listen and ask whose face you put behind the word Father when you start to pray.

On Earth as It Is in Heaven
Does our conversation with God make a difference? As we listen to the prayer known as the “Our Father,” we discover that it changes our perspective on the world and helps us bring together in our lives what should be brought together. As we repeat the words of this prayer, we begin by talking with God about God and about our relationship. In the second part, we talk with God about ourselves and our relationships with others. And the purpose of this entire conversation is to bring these two worlds together-what is in heaven with what is on earth. That is what talking with God is all about.
