If the priests and Pharisees had a defence counsel today, his speech would sound surprisingly reasonable. They had been waiting for a Messiah, only a different one, and over the last week this carpenter had ridden into the city like a king, overturned the tables in the temple and called them hypocrites eight times over. That defence speech opens a sermon about Israel’s religious leaders in the final week before the crucifixion.
