Bombs from the Second World War still go off in Europe, on building sites, in fishing nets and on beaches, and corrosion has made them more dangerous now than on the day they fell. That is exactly how anger behaves when we bury it or nurse it in our hearts for years. That image opens a sermon about the sentence in which Jesus sets anger beside murder (Matthew 5). Before anyone harms another person, they first strip them of their dignity in their own mind, which is why Jesus says to leave your gift at the altar and be reconciled first. Listen if you are carrying a conversation you have been having for years only in your imagination.

Confrontation! Some people fear it, while others love it. However, regardless of how we view confrontation, it is a part of our lives and is sometimes necessary. That is why, in order to learn how to confront others wisely, we turn to Jesus’ teaching, which we find in the Gospel of Matthew. Through it, we can learn not to run away from problems and difficult situations, but to face them in the right way.
