In May 1940 Churchill defied the politicians of his own party and declared that Britain would never surrender, and the right decision cost him a confrontation with his closest colleagues. That scene opens a reflection on the hard words of Jesus: that he came to bring not peace but a sword, setting son against father and daughter against mother (Matthew 10). The sermon speaks of the price paid by those whose faith brought silence to the family table, and of how love for Jesus orders every other love rather than cancelling it. Confrontation! Some people fear it, while others love it. However, regardless of how we view confrontation, it is a part of our lives and is sometimes necessary. Through it, we can learn not to run away from problems and difficult situations, but to face them in the right way.
