A four-year-old girl asks her mother whether God ever sleeps, because if he never does, why did her friend get hurt yesterday? From that question the sermon moves to the shortest book of the Old Testament, the prophecy of Obadiah, and to the story of two kindred nations whose hostility ripened over generations until it found its opportunity. It offers uncomfortable examples of people who sat in church on Sunday and fed their hearts on something entirely different during the week. Listen if the evil around you makes you wonder whether God sees any of it.

In the whirlwind of everyday life, it’s easy to forget that we live in God’s presence and that we are accountable to Him for our choices. That’s why, sometimes, God has to step into our world to remind us of this. In the Old Testament, He did this through the prophets, who were His voice to the people. Although their books were written centuries ago, their voice still rings out clearly and is astonishingly relevant to us today as well. We, too, have similar questions and face similar challenges. So let’s listen to what God is saying to us through His prophets known as the “minor prophets.” They were called this not because they were less important, but simply because their books were shorter. Short and very timely.
