A delegation of Bedouins returned from Tel Aviv to the desert with a gift of twenty water taps, only to discover that not one of them worked, because a tap must be connected to a source. That image stands at the heart of this sermon on faithfulness, a fruit of the Holy Spirit, based on the letter to the church in Philadelphia (Revelation 3), the only congregation Jesus praised without a word of rebuke: though it had little strength, it kept His word and did not deny His name. Everyone would like to be able to love more deeply, enjoy life more fully, live more peacefully, and show more patience, kindness, and self-control. That’s a better way to live, because character matters more than abilities.
