A little girl asks her mother where she came from, and gets an answer completely different from the one her father will give her a few days later. That scene opens a reflection on the genealogy of Jesus in the first chapter of Matthew (Matthew 1), the list of names we usually skim past, which hides far more than it seems. The sermon shows why Matthew placed four women with uncomfortable stories in the King’s family tree, and why he deliberately counted the generations his own way. Wait for the King
When we look at the world with all its social injustice, exploitation, and corrupt politicians, we wish that God would come as King and set things right. The Gospel of Matthew presents Jesus as the promised King who came into the world. Its opening chapters, which tell of His birth, help us understand that this is a completely different King, from a completely different Kingdom than we expected. Yet He is the King we need.
