Real tree or artificial, beetroot soup or mushroom, twelve dishes or an odd number, but does that idyllic picture of Christmas have anything to do with what actually happened? This sermon returns to Luke’s account (Luke 2) and shows the first Christmas stripped of festive trimmings: a scandalous pregnancy, a forced journey, a birth in life-threatening conditions, a feeding trough for a cradle, and flight from a massacre. The preacher sets it beside ancient myths of gods born in palaces and asks why the real God chose the exact opposite. Listen before you sit down to the Christmas table and see the story differently.

Wait for the King
When we look at the world with all its social injustice, exploitation, and corrupt politicians, we wish that God would come as King and set things right. The Gospel of Matthew presents Jesus as the promised King who came into the world. Its opening chapters, which tell of His birth, help us understand that this is a completely different King, from a completely different Kingdom than we expected. Yet He is the King we need.
