A little girl came home much later than usual and explained that she had stopped for a friend who had fallen off her bike. Told that she does not know how to mend bicycles, she answered that she had stopped to help her cry. That story opens a sermon about Elijah under the juniper tree (1 Kings 19). God does not begin with good advice or with reproaches, but lets the prophet sleep and eat, and then speaks not in the wind and the fire but in a quiet, gentle whisper. Listen if you have been through a hard stretch and cannot hear God the way you would like to.
