Matthew came from the line of Levi, whose men had served in the temple for generations, and he ended up a tax collector for the occupying power, excluded from the temple and from his own people. Passing his table, Jesus had every right to tell him exactly what he thought of him, and all he said was: follow me. That sentence opens a sermon about the calling of Matthew (Matthew 9). Jesus set no preconditions, did not tell him to change first or to give back what he had stolen, but invited him into a relationship. Listen if you think you first have to improve before God will have anything to do with you.
