One pastor eventually reversed the tithe: instead of giving away a tenth he began living on a tenth and giving the rest away. He did not do it because he was told to, but because he had stopped treating money as his own property. That story opens a sermon about the ninth chapter of Second Corinthians (2 Corinthians 9). Paul writes there about the collection for the poor in Jerusalem and reminds his readers that God has no need of gifts squeezed out by duty, because he loves a cheerful giver. Listen if you want giving to stop being a grim obligation in your life.
