To make this year’s list of the hundred richest Poles you needed four hundred and ninety one million zloty. For many that is exactly what greatness means, and if not wealth then fame or power, because we all want to count for something. That list opens a sermon about the disciples asking who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 18). Jesus did not answer with a parable but set a child in front of them, someone nobody reckoned with in those days, and went looking for the one that was lost. When Jesus taught, he often told seemingly simple stories called parables. At first glance, they resembled IMAGES of everyday life. However, when his listeners looked closely at them, those IMAGES became MIRRORS in which they could see their own faces. And as they continued to look at them, the MIRRORS became WINDOWS through which they could view life from a completely new perspective, because in these stories, somewhere BETWEEN THE LINES, important lessons about God and life are hidden.
