A seven-time Tour de France winner, a national hero, and then one name struck from the records and a career that cancels itself out. This story opens a reflection on the letter to the church in Pergamum, a community faithful even in the face of death, yet vulnerable to quiet compromise with the culture around it (Revelation 2). The message shows how the teaching of Balaam and the fear of social exclusion open a back door where a frontal attack achieved nothing. Along the route once used to deliver mail were the seven churches of Asia Minor. It is to these communities that Jesus addresses the seven letters found in the Book of Revelation. However, upon reading them carefully, we discover that their message is astonishingly relevant today and applies to the entire Church and to all followers of Jesus who, in various places and circumstances, await His second coming.
