A father and son drive across town for one particular tool and come home with it like a trophy, and then it sits in the garage, taken out only when there is a collection to show off. A tool is worth no more than the purpose it serves, and that is precisely the mistake the church in Corinth makes with its spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 13). The gifts will end, even faith and hope will end, and only love will remain. Listen and ask whether what you are good at is serving anyone, or simply sitting in a display case.
A Lesson in What Matters Most
(Im)perfect
Sometimes we feel like we don’t belong in church because we’re not perfect. Other times, the imperfections of others-their sins and failures-make us prefer to stay away from a church that’s so far from perfect. However, 1 Corinthians shows us how, even while being imperfect ourselves, we can find our place among other imperfect people in the Church, which is both perfect and imperfect at the same time. 1 Corinthians is life itself, but life seen from the perspective of what God can do with it and how He can change it.
