Where Does My Freedom End?

Tomaszów Maz. John Crozier 13.03.2022 Sermon 8 of 16

A patient asks his doctor what he should do to live longer. The doctor works through the list: alcohol? fatty food? sugar? dairy? The answer is no every time, and after a pause the doctor says there are probably a few things left, but he is not sure they are worth it. The Corinthians brought Paul an equally practical question: may we eat this meat or not (1 Corinthians 8)? The answer is not a list of prohibitions, because knowledge without humility and love is not enough, and my freedom is bounded by the conscience of the person next to me. Listen and ask whose conscience recently lost out to your right to choose.

Sometimes we feel like we don’t belong in church because we’re not perfect. Other times, the imperfections of others-their sins and failures-make us prefer to stay away from a church that’s so far from perfect. However, 1 Corinthians shows us how, even while being imperfect ourselves, we can find our place among other imperfect people in the Church, which is both perfect and imperfect at the same time. 1 Corinthians is life itself, but life seen from the perspective of what God can do with it and how He can change it.
