An army is given its orders: march around a walled city in silence for six days, seven times on the seventh day, then shout. No manual of tactics contains that plan, and yet the walls of Jericho fell. That story opens a sermon about two cities and about why defeat at Ai followed so quickly after Jericho (Joshua 6). The victory belonged to God from the start, and the defeat came when one man kept for himself what he was told to leave. Life is all about change and facing new challenges, and some of them seem to be more than we can handle. To better rise to this challenge, it’s worth turning to the Book of Joshua, which tells the story of how the Israelites, though they didn’t feel prepared, had to enter their long-awaited Promised Land. It turns out that as we move forward, what matters most is who we walk with and whom we listen to.
