On Black Friday 2008 a crowd of bargain hunters burst into a shop on Long Island, knocked down the staff who tried to hold them back and trampled one of them to death. That is what a world looks like where everyone chases what is theirs. That scene opens a sermon about a sentence that proposes exactly the opposite: submit to one another (Ephesians 5-6). “No man is an island,” observed John Donne, the British poet. Yet even though we live in a crowded world, many people live in solitude. Others have some relationships, but wonder if it might not be easier for them to be solitary islands.
