A castaway was found after more than a year on a desert island, and there were three huts on the beach: one to live in and two churches. Asked why two, he said you always need a church you attend and one you keep away from, because that is how you know who you are. That joke opens a sermon about the walls we build between us (Ephesians 2). In Ephesus Christians were divided over circumcision; today we are divided by denominations, opinions and football clubs, and Paul insists that the cross is what kills that hostility. Listen if you find it easier to define yourself by what you are not.

“No man is an island,” observed John Donne, the British poet. Yet even though we live in a crowded world, many people live in solitude. Others have some relationships, but wonder if it might not be easier for them to be solitary islands.
