A pilot shot down over Vietnam, who survived thanks to his parachute and then spent six years in prison, heard years later in a restaurant: I packed that parachute of yours. He could not sleep that night, remembering how often he had walked past the man on the carrier without even returning his greeting. That story opens a sermon about the gifts God hands out in a community (Ephesians 4). Unity does not mean uniformity, and our diversity only becomes an asset when it is used to build others up. Listen if you suspect your part of the work is too small for anyone to notice it missing.

“No man is an island,” observed John Donne, the British poet. Yet even though we live in a crowded world, many people live in solitude. Others have some relationships, but wonder if it might not be easier for them to be solitary islands.
