An adopted girl, who had been through hell in a children’s home, cleaned her room diligently every day, afraid that she would lose her new parents’ love and be sent back where she came from. One morning she sat on her bed and asked them straight out: my room is clean, can I stay? That scene opens a sermon about grace, about being given what nobody has earned (Ephesians 2). Dead people can do nothing to bring themselves back to life, so good works are not the price of God’s love but the answer to it. Listen if in your life with God you keep checking whether your room is clean enough yet.

“No man is an island,” observed John Donne, the British poet. Yet even though we live in a crowded world, many people live in solitude. Others have some relationships, but wonder if it might not be easier for them to be solitary islands.
