In the nineties there was a television programme about ordinary people who, in a single moment, ran into fire or jumped into water to save strangers, and none of them wore a cape. This sermon shows that the church needs such people too, and turns to the sixth chapter of Galatians (Galatians 6), where Paul speaks of carrying one another’s burdens and of gentleness towards the one who has fallen. Strong examples follow, from a story of recovery from addiction to a warning that no one is unsinkable. Listen and ask yourself whether you are ready to pay the price of being present for another person.

Andy Stanley once said, “Your lack of responsibility will eventually become someone else’s responsibility.” In other words, if you don’t take responsibility for what has been entrusted to you, someone else will have to take that responsibility for you. A wise life is one in which we don’t shift the blame onto others but face challenges head-on; we don’t burden others with the need to hold our hands, but instead become a source of support for others ourselves.
