Every year the editors of a British weekly publish an issue about what will happen in the world over the next twelve months, and fortune-tellers and authors of books about future wars do the same in their own way. This attempt to peek into the future opens a sermon about Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and the day when a death sentence also hung over Daniel and his friends (Dan 2). Tomorrow often does whatever it wants, but above it stands God, who changes times and seasons, sets up kings and removes them. Listen if you want to check what your peace rests on when you do not know what tomorrow will bring.
Discussion questions
For your small group or for personal reflection after the sermon.
- What did Daniel do after hearing the death sentence, and what does that order of actions say about his attitude?
- Why did Daniel stress, before revealing the dream, that the understanding of the mystery comes from God and not from him?
- What does the prayer in Daniel 2:20-23 say about God, and how does it sound at a time when nothing was certain yet?
- What does it mean that the stone in this dream is the Kingdom of God, and why does the speaker consider it more important than the statue itself?
- Which example of the fall of powerful rulers speaks to you most, and what does it say about who truly reigns over history?
- Where this week can you take action, and where can you only trust God, and how can you bring both together in prayer?
