In the attic, carefully packed in boxes, lie dozens of letters written by two young people separated by hundreds of miles, and it is longing that opens this reflection. The speaker moves from ordinary human longing to the plea of Moses, who after the golden calf refused to move on without God’s presence and dared to say: show me your glory (Exodus 33). The sermon explains that experiencing God’s presence is not an emotional high but coming to know his character, and that this can be practised day by day. We live in a world where the stronger often prevail, and they are the ones who are right. That is why we wonder if there is any hope for those whose voices no one heeds, and who do not have enough strength to stand up for themselves. The Book of Exodus tells the story of how God intervenes in the lives of slaves to make them His people, give them a new identity, and teach them how to live their daily lives with Him. And that, after all, is what we all need on our journey through life.
