At her husband’s funeral a widow with Alzheimer’s kept asking who it was they were burying, and each time she lived through the loss again. Memory is more fragile than we think, and that includes our memory of what God has done for us. That story opens a sermon about the twelve stones carried up from the bed of the Jordan (Joshua 3). Israel was to build them into a sign that children would one day ask about, because a people who forget God’s acts soon forget God himself. Listen if you want places and reminders in your own life that tell you who he is.

Life is all about change and facing new challenges, and some of them seem to be more than we can handle. To better rise to this challenge, it’s worth turning to the Book of Joshua, which tells the story of how the Israelites, though they didn’t feel prepared, had to enter their long-awaited Promised Land. It turns out that as we move forward, what matters most is who we walk with and whom we listen to.
