“I love freedom and I understand it, and I cannot give it away”, sang a Polish band in the years when freedom could only be spoken of under one’s breath. That song opens a reflection on the limits of responsibility that Paul draws for the community in his letter to the Galatians (Galatians 6). The sermon holds together two sides of one truth: there are burdens no one should carry alone, and there are burdens no one can lift off your shoulders. Andy Stanley once said, “Your lack of responsibility will eventually become someone else’s responsibility.” In other words, if you don’t take responsibility for what has been entrusted to you, someone else will have to take that responsibility for you. A wise life is one in which we don’t shift the blame onto others but face challenges head-on; we don’t burden others with the need to hold our hands, but instead become a source of support for others ourselves.
