Open the lid of a piano, lean over the strings and sing a single note, and the string that sounds that note will start to vibrate, though nobody has touched it. That, Tim Keller says, is how temptation works: it strikes exactly the string that is already in you. That image opens a sermon about the armour Paul tells us to put on at the end of a letter about good relationships (Ephesians 6). The enemy is not the difficult people around you, who are themselves victims of evil, and a wise soldier puts on his armour before the battle, not during it. Listen if your hardest fights take place where nobody but you can see them.
