They finally sit down on the sofa in their own house, after years of hunting for a plot, a mortgage and tradesmen, and only then does it dawn on them that everything is about to begin. It is the same with the first day in a new job and the first night after a child is born: the preparation turns out to be easier than what follows it. That observation opens a sermon about the first chapter of Joshua (Joshua 1). Israel stands at the Jordan after forty years of wandering, and God promises it not an easy road but his own presence. Listen if you are on the threshold of something you prayed for and are just starting to be afraid.

Life is all about change and facing new challenges, and some of them seem to be more than we can handle. To better rise to this challenge, it’s worth turning to the Book of Joshua, which tells the story of how the Israelites, though they didn’t feel prepared, had to enter their long-awaited Promised Land. It turns out that as we move forward, what matters most is who we walk with and whom we listen to.
