After the attacks of September the eleventh American churches filled up, but within a few weeks attendance was back to what it had been. Fear can drive us to God, and calm can just as effectively drive us away from him. That observation opens a sermon about Joshua’s farewell speech (Joshua 23). Israel now had land, peace and plenty, and precisely then it heard the warning that the most dangerous season is the one in which nothing hurts and nothing forces you to pray. Life is all about change and facing new challenges, and some of them seem to be more than we can handle. To better rise to this challenge, it’s worth turning to the Book of Joshua, which tells the story of how the Israelites, though they didn’t feel prepared, had to enter their long-awaited Promised Land. It turns out that as we move forward, what matters most is who we walk with and whom we listen to.
