A pastor who, at his wife’s twenty-eighth operation, was still crying out to God, how much longer, opens this reflection on the book of Habakkuk. The prophet brought God exactly the same questions and received an answer he never expected: Israel would be judged by the hand of the even crueller Babylonians (Habakkuk 1-3). In the whirlwind of everyday life, it’s easy to forget that we live in God’s presence and that we are accountable to Him for our choices. That’s why, sometimes, God has to step into our world to remind us of this. In the Old Testament, He did this through the prophets, who were His voice to the people. Although their books were written centuries ago, their voice still rings out clearly and is astonishingly relevant to us today as well. We, too, have similar questions and face similar challenges. So let’s listen to what God is saying to us through His prophets known as the “minor prophets.” They were called this not because they were less important, but simply because their books were shorter.
