At a conference the participants were asked to draw a portrait of their father. The preacher drew the oval of a face with one large question mark inside it, because his father had left when he was six. Then they were told to look at that drawing as if they were looking at God. That scene opens a sermon about the altar the two and a half tribes built by the Jordan (Joshua 22). It was not for sacrifices but so that the next generation would have something to ask about, because the memory of God is handed on through what children see. Listen if you want to leave behind more than property.

Life is all about change and facing new challenges, and some of them seem to be more than we can handle. To better rise to this challenge, it’s worth turning to the Book of Joshua, which tells the story of how the Israelites, though they didn’t feel prepared, had to enter their long-awaited Promised Land. It turns out that as we move forward, what matters most is who we walk with and whom we listen to.
