When William Booth’s colleagues shrank from walking into London pubs, his answer was brief: those are our people. He did not build the Salvation Army out of those who came to him, but out of those he went after. That story opens a sermon about the calling of Levi and the meal in his house (Mark 2). Jesus sits down at table with tax collectors and sinners, and when the devout question him he says that it is the sick who need a doctor, not the healthy.
