Whom do you listen to when the culture around you keeps repeating: follow your own heart and build happiness your own way? This sermon opens a new series on the prophet Elijah and the days of King Ahab (1 Kings 16-17), an age of economic success and spiritual compromise, when faith was conveniently reshaped to fit people’s tastes. Elijah received no new revelation; the word God had already given was enough for him to stand in the truth and pay the price for it. As we go through life, we hear many different voices. We ignore some of them, while we pay more attention to others. From this cacophony of sounds, we must choose the right ones, because so much in life depends on whom you listen to.
However, in the daily hustle and bustle, it’s easy to miss the most important voice-the voice of God Himself.
In the story of the prophet Elijah, everyone faces the same challenge:
Will they listen? Will the king listen? Will Israel listen? And even-will the prophet himself listen?
In this story, full of noise and conflicting voices, there are those who not only heard but also listened. Sometimes they are the least likely people.
But the most important question is:
Will I hear-and will I obey?
