In 1914 a British peace council declared that war was a thing of the past and peace the new spirit of the age, less than a month later Europe was in flames. That misjudgement opens a reflection on the seventeenth chapter of First Kings (1 Kings 17), where God sends Elijah into the heart of the devastation, to a widow who has nothing left but a handful of flour and a little oil. The sermon does not stop at the miracle of provision, it goes further, to where relief turns into a new tragedy and the hardest question of faith is born. Listen if you want to know what God answers when life surprises us in the worst possible way.

Do You Hear God?
As we go through life, we hear many different voices. We ignore some of them, while we pay more attention to others. From this cacophony of sounds, we must choose the right ones, because so much in life depends on whom you listen to.
However, in the daily hustle and bustle, it’s easy to miss the most important voice-the voice of God Himself.
In the story of the prophet Elijah, everyone faces the same challenge:
Will they listen? Will the king listen? Will Israel listen? And even-will the prophet himself listen?
In this story, full of noise and conflicting voices, there are those who not only heard but also listened. Sometimes they are the least likely people.
But the most important question is:
Will I hear-and will I obey?
