Everyone Has Their Place

Tomaszów Maz. Sebastian Wójcik 18.10.2026 Sermon 6 of 6

In the film Cast Away, the main character, stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash, draws a face on a volleyball and names it Wilson. Sometimes in church we feel like that ball: present, but seemingly adding nothing. And sometimes we belittle others ourselves, because we think we know best. This story opens a sermon on spiritual gifts and the one body of Christ (1 Cor 12). Paul shows that we receive gifts undeserved, for the common good, and that in the church no one is unnecessary and no one is more important. Listen if you wonder whether anyone would notice if you disappeared from your community tomorrow.

  3. How does the image of the body in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 answer two temptations: "I'm not needed here" and "I don't need you"?
  4. When did you last downplay your own role in the community or overlook someone's service? What was behind it?
  5. Who in your church do you notice only when they are missing? How can you thank them this week?
  6. Why is love "the most excellent way," and how can you use your gift with love for a specific person this week?

Church: Real or Ideal?

Many people make no secret of their disappointment with the Church and wonder why they should bother with it at all. Others keep moving from one community to another in search of the perfect one, yet none matches their picture of the ideal, because everywhere there are very imperfect people. Perhaps, though, by looking only at what we can see, we miss part of the picture. The Church is God’s idea. It is a place where we can learn to live together and to love people who can be difficult. In his First Letter to the Corinthians, the apostle Paul helps us see the Church from a wider perspective and find our place in the tension between the real and the ideal.
