A January evening in 2006, a Katowice exhibition hall full of people admiring carrier pigeons, and a roof that suddenly collapsed under the weight of snow. That tragedy opens a reflection on the beginning of Exodus (Exodus 1-2): the story of the Israelites, on whom slavery fell like a bolt from the blue, and of Moses, saved from the water in defiance of Pharaoh’s orders. The sermon shows that with God there is no such thing as a hopeless situation, He sees a way out even where we no longer see anything. We live in a world where the stronger often prevail, and they are the ones who are right. That is why we wonder if there is any hope for those whose voices no one heeds, and who do not have enough strength to stand up for themselves. The Book of Exodus tells the story of how God intervenes in the lives of slaves to make them His people, give them a new identity, and teach them how to live their daily lives with Him. And that, after all, is what we all need on our journey through life.
