A simple shepherd stands up in a religious capital and lists, nation by nation, the sins of everyone around, while his hearers nod along: they had that coming. But as they start to leave, Amos says it is not over yet, and points his finger at them (Amos 1-2). This sermon asks whether people who sincerely believe they belong to God can still overlook God’s justice in their own lives and their own community. The Time of the Prophets
In the whirlwind of everyday life, it’s easy to forget that we live in God’s presence and that we are accountable to Him for our choices. That’s why, sometimes, God has to step into our world to remind us of this. In the Old Testament, He did this through the prophets, who were His voice to the people. Although their books were written centuries ago, their voice still rings out clearly and is astonishingly relevant to us today as well. We, too, have similar questions and face similar challenges. So let’s listen to what God is saying to us through His prophets known as the “minor prophets.” They were called this not because they were less important, but simply because their books were shorter. Short and very timely.
