A doctor who discovered how to save thousands of women in childbirth spent years speaking to colleagues who refused to listen, and it cost him everything. That story opens a reflection on Elijah and King Ahab (1 Kings 17), on a time when a whole nation stopped listening to God and convenient gods of rain and harvest moved into the empty space. The message shows that such gods always take more than they give, and that being God’s voice is costly and changes the messenger first. As we go through life, we hear many different voices. We ignore some of them, while we pay more attention to others. From this cacophony of sounds, we must choose the right ones, because so much in life depends on whom you listen to.
However, in the daily hustle and bustle, it’s easy to miss the most important voice-the voice of God Himself.
In the story of the prophet Elijah, everyone faces the same challenge:
Will they listen? Will the king listen? Will Israel listen? And even-will the prophet himself listen?
In this story, full of noise and conflicting voices, there are those who not only heard but also listened. Sometimes they are the least likely people.
But the most important question is:
Will I hear-and will I obey?
