Hospitality: An Open Door to Change

Łódź Szymon Karkowski 13.09.2026 Sermon 7 of 11

Two roommates in San Francisco couldn’t afford their rent, so in October 2007 they put air mattresses in their apartment and invited strangers to stay the night. They had no idea they were opening the door to something that would outgrow their whole lives. This story opens a sermon about Abraham, who in the heat of the day noticed three travelers in front of his tent (Gen 18). Hospitality begins with noticing another person, going out to meet them, and making room for them, and the rest can be left to God. Listen if you want to find out whether someone at your door might feel welcome.

Discussion questions

For your small group or for personal reflection after the sermon.

  1. What does Abraham do in Genesis 18:1-15 from the moment he notices the three men, and what does this say about his attitude?
  2. Why did Sarah laugh to herself, and how did God respond to her disbelief?
  3. The speaker talks about three steps: notice, go out to meet, make room. Which one is hardest for you, and why?
  4. What usually keeps you from opening your door to someone who might disturb your peace?
  5. What does it mean to you that true hospitality does not depend on what you put on the table?
  6. Who from your community, your neighbors, or your acquaintances could you notice, invite, or listen to this week?

Together

We live on a very crowded planet, connected by a network of social media. In our world, it’s sometimes hard to get away from people, yet we still feel increasingly lonely. We avoid crowds, yet we long for close relationships. And when we do spend time with others, we aren’t quite sure how to build those relationships. That’s why we need to discover what it means to be TOGETHER, because that’s exactly the kind of church we want to be.
