A man rebuilds a city that had lain in ruins for centuries and pays for it with the lives of two of his sons, and the chronicler records it in one cold sentence. That scene from the days of King Ahab (1 Kings 16) opens a reflection on ages that looked golden, and on what happens to a society that stops listening to God. Against that background stands Elijah, an ordinary man with no visions and no voice from heaven, holding only the written word of God, and that proved to be enough (1 Kings 17). As we go through life, we hear many different voices. We ignore some of them, while we pay more attention to others. From this cacophony of sounds, we must choose the right ones, because so much in life depends on whom you listen to.
However, in the daily hustle and bustle, it’s easy to miss the most important voice-the voice of God Himself.
In the story of the prophet Elijah, everyone faces the same challenge:
Will they listen? Will the king listen? Will Israel listen? And even-will the prophet himself listen?
In this story, full of noise and conflicting voices, there are those who not only heard but also listened. Sometimes they are the least likely people.
But the most important question is:
Will I hear-and will I obey?
