Buses in London once carried adverts paid for by atheists: there is probably no God, so enjoy your life and have a lie-in on Sunday. Some of those same people went on to build something like a church: Sunday assemblies with songs, a talk and a moment of silence, because they missed having a community. That story opens a sermon about where community actually begins (Ephesians 1). It begins not with us but with God, who has always been a relationship himself and who decided to take us into his family. Listen if you have people all around you and still feel lonely.

“No man is an island,” observed John Donne, the British poet. Yet even though we live in a crowded world, many people live in solitude. Others have some relationships, but wonder if it might not be easier for them to be solitary islands. Our new sermon series based on Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians shows how the fact that we believe in One God, who exists in three Persons, influences our relationships with people of other nationalities, as well as our family and social relationships.
