You drive a road you have known for years and see that the forest is gone, only the stumps of felled trees remain. That is exactly what Isaiah sees as he looks at the cut-down stump of David’s line, and exactly there he notices a tiny green shoot (Isaiah 11). The Gospel According to Isaiah? We’re very familiar with the four Gospels, but we’ve never heard of one like this. However, although the prophet Isaiah lived long before the time of Jesus and the writing of the four Gospels, his book is so filled with hope for future salvation that some call Isaiah the evangelist of the Old Testament. In his book, we find numerous prophecies of the coming of the promised Savior and images of renewal. That is why, as we prepare for the upcoming Christmas season, we want to listen to the Gospel according to Isaiah, who waited for the Messiah and helped others in that waiting.
