What do you do when the Christmas lights come on all around you and all you want is to cry? This sermon begins with a boy sitting alone on a bunk at summer camp and leads to the fortieth chapter of Isaiah (Isaiah 40), where the prophet calls out words of comfort to people who had lost their home, their freedom and their hope. The speaker shows that God’s comfort does not stop at soothing pain but also calls us to clear away what keeps us in hopelessness, resentment, pride, unforgiveness. Listen if this year another Christmas feels more like a weight than a joy.

The Gospel According to Isaiah? We’re very familiar with the four Gospels, but we’ve never heard of one like this. However, although the prophet Isaiah lived long before the time of Jesus and the writing of the four Gospels, his book is so filled with hope for future salvation that some call Isaiah the evangelist of the Old Testament. In his book, we find numerous prophecies of the coming of the promised Savior and images of renewal. That is why, as we prepare for the upcoming Christmas season, we want to listen to the Gospel according to Isaiah, who waited for the Messiah and helped others in that waiting.
