A Christmas Eve table, with grandparents, aunts and uncles seen only once a year, an image almost everyone knows, and one that many people are missing. That scene opens a reflection on Isaiah’s vision of the banquet on Mount Zion (Isaiah 25), announced at a moment when everything pointed toward ruin and exile. The message moves from that promise through the wedding at Cana to the marriage supper of the Lamb in Revelation, showing that our deepest longings are only a faint echo of what God has prepared. The Gospel According to Isaiah
The Gospel According to Isaiah? We’re very familiar with the four Gospels, but we’ve never heard of one like this. However, although the prophet Isaiah lived long before the time of Jesus and the writing of the four Gospels, his book is so filled with hope for future salvation that some call Isaiah the evangelist of the Old Testament. In his book, we find numerous prophecies of the coming of the promised Savior and images of renewal. That is why, as we prepare for the upcoming Christmas season, we want to listen to the Gospel according to Isaiah, who waited for the Messiah and helped others in that waiting.
