A crowded shopping mall, a queue to see Santa, two boys running wild, and an elf’s question about whose children these actually are. The father answers, half joking, that he has not decided yet, and from that scene begins a reflection on the fortieth chapter of Isaiah (Isaiah 40), where God finally answers, after years of silence, whose people these are. The sermon shows why the prophet’s comfort is not a pat on the head but a promise of strength, and why the one who holds power and the one who has lost everything stand in the same danger of unbelief. The Gospel According to Isaiah? We’re very familiar with the four Gospels, but we’ve never heard of one like this. However, although the prophet Isaiah lived long before the time of Jesus and the writing of the four Gospels, his book is so filled with hope for future salvation that some call Isaiah the evangelist of the Old Testament. In his book, we find numerous prophecies of the coming of the promised Savior and images of renewal. That is why, as we prepare for the upcoming Christmas season, we want to listen to the Gospel according to Isaiah, who waited for the Messiah and helped others in that waiting.
